Superwomen & Rocks

Our first impression of Jeju island is that we find it to be more of a tourist island. We see more hotels compare to Seoul but less stores. In Jeju island, we saw that the people who lives here farm mostly. They plant almost everything except for rice because rice needs a lot of water but the soil in Jeju is not useful for the rice plantation. They also use rocks as their territory around their farms and house. And to us, it seems like rock is a very important object to Jeju, they seem to use rocks to represent things such as the wishing rock at Bijarim forest or the Yongduam Dragon head rock. There's the grandpa rock, which represents many good things such as becoming successful or living longer. It was also believed that the grandpa rock would help Jeju's residence produce male. Not only was male an important part of the culture but the women in Jeju were an important part of this island as well. Long ago women would carry pots of water everyday for the family, they also did a lot of the food hunt in the seas. So now the women here are famous for their diving expertise which is used to look for octopus, oysters and other seafoods.
