Where are all the kids? HAGWONS!

When we were reading about Korean’s education and their study habit, which consist of more than 12 hours a day, it was hard to believe. We did not think that it was true until we saw it ourselves, when we went to visit a tutoring academy (hagwon) in Gangnam. The moment we enter the door, we see students studying everywhere from the coffee shop to the hallway. We were amazed on how there are so many students studying in a hot summer day instead of playing outside. Then, we realized that every time we went out to explore, we didn’t see as many kids outside because most of them are in a hagwon academy. Students are in hagwon to prepare for exams or to improve on their skills in math, reading, English, and other subjects. The lecture taught in hagwon is specificity for one subject per class and, students can take as many classes or subject to improve. If students have a good score on the entrance exam, they will have a better chance of getting into a good college.
