In our book, it talked about” Hagwons” which is the Korean term for private tutoring. When we first read the book we didn’t have a strong understanding what Hagwons was and why it was such a competitive in South Korea. In one of the lecture the Professor briefly went over

about the Korean History of how they became an economic power house with in 60 years after the Korea War and how education became a social mobility for them. As the population increase, it became more competitive for many students to be accepted into universities. In order for

students to become uniquely different from everyone they had to get awards, be the top 5 percent, and take preparation classes to help their profile to be outstanding for universities. This where Hagwons becomes a blooming business in South Korea because they were able to offer

these services to help students be prepared as well give them additional resources.
