These fireworks are from the Korean Independence Day celebration that I attended! The were right on the shore of the Han River so it was amazingly beautiful! I think it is so cool that I got to be in Korea for this holiday. After seeing these fireworks and seeing how most shops did not even open on this day, it made me curious about the holiday. Although the experience itself did not teach me too much about Korean culture, the event made me go online to research more about it. August 15th marks Korea’s Liberation Day from Japan. Korea had been occupied by Japan since 1910, however, in 1945 this was put to an end after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Japan’s surrender. Three years after this, Korea established their two main governments (north and south). The name of the holiday in Korean is 광복절 and the rominization of it is Gwangbokjeol.
