It was a complete surprise to me that we happened to be in Korea during their Independence Day. The date of August 15, 2015 marked seventy wonderful years since Korea was given freedom from Japanese rule, after the end of the Second World War. We had literally found out about all this two days before the actual holiday. A friend told us that there would be several different festivals going on that day, all to celebrate the same thing. I was really excited to be able to experience Independence Day in a different country! A local friend took us to one of the festivals, located at Yeoui-do, along the Han River. At this particular festival, there were many cool things planned, including a fireworks show, a kpop concert, and also an indie concert. The most amazing part was that it was all free! Entrance and participation was all free, the only thing we had to pay for was food. I was really looking forward to the fireworks show and the kpop concert but unfortunately we couldn’t get in to the concert and decided to leave four hours before the fireworks show even started because there were way too many people.
